The Rhondda's Leading
Rally Club |
Our Championship Year
by
Andrew Gregory and Huw Davies
| Going into 2005 we intended to do the National Tarmac Championship, but weren't able to as I didn't hold a National A licence, so we had to go for plan B, the Welsh Clubmans Tarmac Championship. | |
|
We had already missed the first round at Pembrey, the Rali Cwm Gwendraeth. Round two, the Tour of Epynt, was unfortunately postponed until the the end of the year and then scratched from the championship. Round three was the Tour of Caerwent on the 27th March. We were really looking forward to this event, not only to score some points, but because the venue would suit the Micra. So off we went in |

the transit with the car in tow, only for the van to break down in Pontypridd, ruining the day before started! By now I started to think it wasn't meant to be!! So anyway chin up and look forward to round four, the Bisley Munt Stages in Talbenny. We`start car 48 on Huw's 48th birthday. (Could this be a good omen?) We had a good run finishing second in class, and picking up maximum championship points. The next round was the Enville Stages in Angelesy. Due to the the distance we travelled up the night before and stayed in a Bed and Breakfast. We were a bit optomistic for a good result on this event as we purchased a new Micra with better spec. We couldn't wait ti try it! After the first two stages we were impressed with the cars handling and the results confirmed our suspicions. We were 2nd in class and just 4 seconds off the class lead. On stage 3 we were on the ragged edge,\chasing the class lead when I clipped a tyre exiting the chicane. The problem was it was a large tractor tyre and it caused severe damage to the near side of the car, putting us out of the rally. The next round was Bath Motor Club's Azimghur Stages at Colerne, which wouldn't really suit the car due t the amount of long straights. But we needed points if we were going to get anywhere in the championship. We suffered a puncture on the first stage, putting us to the back of the field, so we just kept it steady for the rest of the day. Fortunately we scored maximum championship points due to our rival not doing this event. Not long to wait for the next event, the Harry Flatters on Epynt. I was looking forward to this rally as I love the challenge of the ranges. The morning stages didn't go to well due to me and Huw not getting on with the pace notes, and loosing the intercom for a full stage didn't help. Thankfully Jon and James were able to fix it in time for the afternoon stages. We seemed to get it together in the afternoon posting much better times and ending the day 3rd in class. The Peter Lloyd Stages was the next round at Pembrey, but we had to miss this one as I was on holiday. Luckily our rival in the Darrian failed to finish, just taking 5 points for starting. The final championship round was back to Angelsey. After much debate we decided to drop this one as we couldn't be caught for the under 1400cc class win. I had also bought a new engine and brakes for the car with a view to making sure all the changes work properly in 2006 and contesting the National Tarmac Championship in 2007. Andrew and Huw would like to take this opportunity to thank Jon & James Ashley for all their support with servicing. Carl Davies for preparing the car, and Alan Lewis for putting it all back together after Angelsey. |
